Project Hail Mary – bercerita tentang Ryland Grace, seorang guru sains yang terbangun sendirian di sebuah pesawat luar angkasa tanpa ingatan tentang identitas maupun tujuan misinya. Saat ingatannya perlahan kembali, ia menyadari bahwa dirinya sedang menjalankan misi untuk menyelamatkan Bumi dari ancaman misterius yang dapat menyebabkan kepunahan manusia. Namun, dalam perjalanannya, ia justru menemukan bahwa satu satunya harapan untuk menyelesaikan misi tersebut mungkin datang dari sosok yang tidak pernah ia duga.

WOW – menurutku ini novel science fiction yang sangat masuk di akalku wkwkwk. Untuk aku yang dasarnya anak sosial dan bukan anak sains, namun penjelasan sains di buku ini sangat-sangat mudah dipahami. Meskipun penuh dengan istilah ilmiah sains, astronomi, mekanik, teknis, dan lain sebagainya – penulis, maupun penerjemah buku ini tak luput membuat footnote atau catatan kaki untuk penjelasan lengkapnya. Dan untuk sang penulis, Andy Weir juga selalu mengelaborasikan situasi sains yang rumit dengan bahasa yang mudah dipahami dan melakukan penjelasan ulang secara singkat. 

Alur, pemeran, dan juga latar dari cerita ini sangat bold alias – masing-masing dari mereka memiliki daya tariknya masing-masing. Alur cerita yang maju mundur menyesuaikan ingatan Grace yang perlahan menyatu, pemeran dan tiap karakter dengan ciri khas dan kepribadiannya masing-masing, serta latar waktu dan tempat yang sangat menarik mulai dari storyline di Bumi hingga luar angkasa, serta mulai dari waktu pertama kali pesawat diterbangkan hingga 4 tahun perjalanan ke Tau Ceti. 

Aku membaca buku ini sebelum menonton filmnya, dan buku jauh lebih terperinci (tentu saja), namun dari buku kita bisa melihat keseluruhan karakter lebih mendalam, terutama tentang perasaan dan trauma Grace itu sendiri. 

I highly recommend it! Kalau kalian mau lanskap yang lebih detail tentang ceritanya sangat aku rekomendasiin untuk baca bukunya juga.

Project Hail Mary – follows Ryland Grace, a science teacher who wakes up alone on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or what his mission is. As his memories slowly return, he realizes that he has been sent on a mission to save Earth from a mysterious threat that could lead to the extinction of humanity. However, along the way, he discovers that the only hope of completing his mission might come from someone he never expected.

My Opinion

WOW. In my opinion, this is a science fiction novel that actually makes so much sense to me lol. As someone who is more of a social sciences person and definitely not a science person, I found the scientific explanations in this book surprisingly easy to understand. Even though it is packed with scientific, astronomical, mechanical, technical, and other complex terms, the author and translator did an amazing job of providing footnotes and explanations whenever needed. Andy Weir also does a great job of breaking down complicated scientific concepts into simple language and briefly explaining them again whenever necessary.

The plot, characters, and setting are all so bold, with each one having its own appeal. The nonlinear storyline follows Grace’s memories as they slowly come back together, while every character has their own distinct personality and charm. The settings are also fascinating, taking us from Earth to outer space, and from the moment the spaceship is launched all the way through the four year journey to Tau Ceti.

I read this book before watching the movie, and the book is definitely much more detailed, which is expected. However, the book allows us to understand the characters on a much deeper level, especially Grace’s feelings and trauma.

I highly recommend it! If you want a more detailed experience and a deeper understanding of the story, I definitely recommend reading the book too.
