Catatan Josephine – Charles Hayward, pemuda berdarah Inggris yang sedang ditugaskan ke Mesir yang saat itu kondisi negara sedang dalam peperangan. Dalam melakukan pekerjaannya, Charles bertemu dengan Sophia yang juga sedang bertugas di Mesir. Seiring interaksi yang berlanjut, mereka berdua merasakan keserasian; mulai dari selera humor dan komunikasinya–maka Charles pun berniat untuk ke jenjang hubungan lebih serius dengan melamar Sophia. Namun, niat baik Charles harus tertunda dan terancam gagal karena kakek dari Sophia—Aristide Leonides, meninggal secara mengejutkan. 

Sophia sangat yakin bahwa pembunuhnya adalah salah satu dari anggota keluarga Leonides sehingga meminta Charles untuk mengamati keluarganya dari sudut pandang “orang dalam”. Mendengar hal tersebut Charles—yang juga seorang anak dari seorang komisaris kepolisian, terkejut dan menyetujui ide dari pujaan hatinya. 

Apakah yang sebenarnya terjadi dengan Aristide Leonides? Mampukah Charles mengungkap siapa pembunuh dari kasus ini?

Opini Nick

🙋🏻‍♂️ Keliatannya novel ini kecil dan tipis ya, tapi plot twistnya bener-bener ngga terduga. Memang dari segi perkenalan tokohnya ini termasuk yang ringkas, bahkan ada beberapa karakter yang latar belakangnya dikit banget. Tapi bagusnya ga terlalu kerasa loncat dan jadinya ngga bertele-tele, aku aja baca cuma sehari. Yang agak kerasa kaku itu justru dari terjemahannya, ya bagaimanapun ini termasuk novel klasik yang bahasa Inggrisnya pasti lebih sulit dipahami. Tapi secara keseluruhan novel ini oke banget dibaca sama pemula yang baru mau baca genre misteri pembunuhan gini.

Did you know, the famous writer Agatha Christie was once almost illiterate (unable to read and write). This happened because Agatha's mother forbade her to learn to read until she was eight years old and did not send her to school until she was 15 years old. In terms of novels, 'Crooked House' or known as 'Josephine's Notes' in Indonesian has been adapted as a movie in 2017 under the title 'Crooked House.'

Here Comes the Review!

The Crooked House – Charles Hayward, a young Englishman who was assigned to Egypt, where the country was at war. While doing his work, Charles met Sophia who was also serving in Egypt. As the interaction continued, they both felt a sense of compatibility; from their sense of humor and communication–so Charles intended to take the relationship to a more serious level by proposing to Sophia. However, Charles’ good intentions were delayed and even almost failed because Sophia's grandfather—Aristide Leonides, passed away in a shocking way.

Sophia was so sure that the killer was a member of the Leonides family—she asked Charles to observe the family from an “insider's” perspective. Charles, who is also the son of a police commissioner, is shocked and agrees to Sophia’s idea.  

What really happened to Aristide Leonides? Can Charles uncover the murderer in this case?

Inside Nick’s Mind

🙋🏻‍♂️ It looks like a small and thin novel, but the plot twist is totally unexpected. Indeed, from the character introductions, this is a concise one, there are even some characters with very little background. But the good thing is that it doesn't feel too jumpy and it's not long-winded, I read it in a day. What feels a bit stiff is the translation, after all this is a classic novel whose English is definitely more difficult to understand. But overall, this novel is recommended to read for beginners who want to read a kind of murder mystery genre.
