Matinya Lord Edgware — Cerita dimulai di sebuah perjamuan pesta yang menghadirkan aktor dan aktris yang tampan dan cantik, serta orang-orang penting lainnya termasuk Hastings dan Poirot. Perjamuan ini sekaligus pertunjukan drama yang dimainkan oleh aktris cantik dan bertalenta bernama Charlotta Adams. Ada seorang aktris yang berperawakan cantik, mungil, dan muda bernama Jane Wilkinson menghampiri Poirot untuk bercengkrama karena dia memang lelaki yang terkenal dengan kecerdikan dalam intuisi dan intelektualnya. Setelah bercengkrama dengan Poirot, Jane Wilkinson meminta bantuannya untuk menyelesaikan masalahnya dengan suaminya yang seorang Lord Edgware. Usut punya usut ternyata Jane meminta Poirot agar dia membujuk suaminya untuk melakukan perceraian dengan Jane, yang dirasa Poirot aneh karena jarang sekali ada seseorang yang meminta bantuan seperti ini di luar kasus pembunuhan.
Singkat cerita Poirot datang ke tempat Lord Edgware untuk mencoba melaksanakan permintaan dari aktris cantik tersebut, tak disangka Lord Edgware menyetujui permintaan Jane dan bahkan dirinya telah memberi surat pada aktris tersebut terkait perceraian ini. Namun, sesaat Hastings dan Poirot meninggalkan kediaman Lord Edgware, dirinya melihat senyum Lord Edgware berubah menjadi seringai dan tatapanya berkilat-kilat marah. Keesokan paginya, Lord Edgware dengan tak terduga ditemukan tewas di kediamannya dengan luka tusuk pada tengkuknya.

Ini adalah novel pertamaku buat seri detektif Poirot dari Agatha Christie. Alur cerita dan premisnya luar biasa bagus. Kalau kalian sering baca novel tentang detektif atau terkait kasus pembunuhan pasti kalian keseruan sendiri kan baca analisis yang sangat kompleks dari pemikiran hebat sebuah karakter. Inilah yang aku rasa ketika aku baca novel ini, karena memang karakter Poirot ini dibangun sedemikian intelektual pasti intuisi dan analisisnya sangat tajam dan bikin aku excited, tapi sayang tetep ada yang mengganggu kenyamanan aku baca yaitu dari segi penerjemahannya. Karena ini novel klasik dan termasuk sastra mungkin memang susah dalam menerjemahkan frasa dan katanya dan kadang jadi terasa sangat harfiah hasilnya. Anyway, karakter Poirot ini bikin aku inget sama karakter ilmuwan pintar di seri detektif karya Keigo Higashino, ada yang bisa tebak? Ya, bener detektif Galileo/Manabu Yukawa.

Lord Edgware Dies — The story begins at a banquet where handsome and beautiful actors and actresses are present, as well as other important people including Hastings and Poirot. The banquet is also a drama performed by the beautiful and talented actress Charlotta Adams. There was a beautiful, petite, young actress named Jane Wilkinson who approached Poirot for a chat because he was a man known for his intuition and intellectual ingenuity. After chatting with Poirot, Jane Wilkinson asked for his help to solve her problem with her husband, Lord Edgware. It turned out that Jane had asked Poirot to persuade her husband to divorce Jane, which Poirot found strange as it was rare for someone to ask for such a favor outside of a murder case.
To make a long story short, Poirot came to Lord Edgware's place to try to carry out the request of the beautiful actress, unexpectedly Lord Edgware agreed to Jane's request and even gave a letter to the actress regarding this divorce. However, as Hastings and Poirot leave Lord Edgware's residence, he sees Lord Edgware's smile turn into a grimace and his eyes flicker with anger. The next morning, Lord Edgware was unexpectedly found dead at his residence with a stab wound to the nape of his neck.

This is my first novel in Agatha Christie's Poirot detective series. The storyline and premise are excellent. If you often read novels about detectives or related to murder cases, you must be having fun reading a very complex analysis of a character's great mind. This is what I felt when I read this novel, because Poirot's character is built in such an intellectual way that his intuition and analysis are very sharp and make me excited, but unfortunately there are still things that interfere with my reading comfort, that is the translation. Because it's a classic novel and it's a literary novel, it might be difficult to translate the phrases and words but however it feels very literal. Anyway, Poirot's character made me remember of the smart scientist character in Keigo Higashino's detective series, can anyone guess? Yes, it's detective Galileo/Manabu Yukawa.
