Penance — Sae, Maki, Akiko, dan Yuka adalah empat anak yang bersahabat di sebuah desa kecil. Desa tersebut adalah desa yang terbelakang atau jauh dari hiruk pikuk dan kemajuan teknologi. Hal tersebut ditandai dengan sifat penduduknya yang suka menggunjing atau gosip dengan penduduk lain, jumlahnya hanya itu-itu saja, pendidikannya kurang memadai dan bahkan saking kecilnya desa ini pengumuman waktu habisnya hari bisa menggunakan lagu yang dikumandangkan dari satu pengeras suara. Sae, Maki, Akiko, dan Yuka selalu bermain bersama di desa tersebut, permainan kesukaan mereka adalah boneka Perancis yang saat itu merupakan trend di desa tersebut. Semua anak di desa tersebut pasti memiliki boneka Perancis dan perawakannya sangat mirip dengan pemiliknya, pada suatu hari sebuah keluarga pindah dari Tokyo ke desa kecil tersebut. Keluarga tersebut pindah ke desa kecil tersebut karena mereka mendirikan sebuah pabrik baru yaitu pabrik manufaktur Adachi, tentunya sang kepala keluarga tersebut merupakan direktur utama dari pabrik Adachi. Keluarga tersebut terdiri dari tiga orang yaitu Adachi, Asako dan anak kecil perempuan bernama Emily.

Keluarga Emily pada dasarnya memang keluarga yang kaya raya, mereka tinggal di apartemen mewah dan tentunya memiliki barang-barang mewah. Singkat cerita Emily akhirnya disekolahkan di sekolah lokal desa tersebut yang mana dia menjadi teman baru dari Sae, Maki, Akiko, dan Yuka. Seperti anak-anak pada umumnya Emily sangatlah senang memiliki teman-teman baru, walaupun terdapat kesenjangan ekonomi di antara Emily dan teman-teman barunya itu dia tetap memperkenalkan mereka kepada Ibunya dan memperlihatkan boneka kesayangannya yaitu boneka Barbie. Namun, keempat anak tersebut tidak tertarik pada boneka Barbie karena menurut mereka boneka itu sangat mahal lalu mereka memperkenalkan boneka Perancis kepada Emily kemudian lambat laun mereka pun menjadi lebih akrab dengan Emily. Pada suatu hari Emily dan keempat anak tersebut berencana bermain bola voli di lapangan sekolah pada libur musim panas, setelah mereka mempersiapkan barang untuk bermain seperti bola dan lainnya mereka pun pergi ke lapangan dan bermain voli dengan target mengoper bola sampai seratus. Saat mereka hampir menyentuh angka seratus ada seorang laki-laki yang menghentikan permainan mereka dan meminta tolong untuk membantu memutar baut dan memerlukan satu orang, kemudian setelah mereka menimbang dan mengajukan diri lelaki tersebut memilih Emily untuk membantunya, dan permainan pun berlanjut. Namun, Emily tidak kunjung kembali ke lapangan, apa yang terjadi? Kemudian, mereka berempat pergi ke kolam tempat di mana Emily dan lelaki tersebut pergi namun Emily tidak ada di sana, mereka akhirnya mengecek kamar mandi wanita dan laki-laki dan Emily ditemukan di kamar mandi laki-laki dengan kondisi sudah tidak bernyawa.

Opini Kami

🙋🏻‍♂️Sebenernya aku ngga bisa berkata-kata karena saking banyaknya yang bisa dibahas dari novel ini. Oke, kita mulai dari alur ceritanya. Alur ceritanya sangat sempurna menurutku, kenapa? Karena sang author—Minato Kanae bisa membuat semua tragedi dan plot twist di sini jadi satu lingkaran penuh, dengan kata lain dari masalah dari sumber pertama ujungnya berdampak ke sumber pertama itu juga. Pengembangan alurnya juga unik banget, ada lima POV yang disuguhkan di novel ini dan yang akan membawa alur cerita ini, semuanya punya tragedi masing-masing di dalamnya dan penuh kegelapan. Meskipun alurnya dibawa dari lima POV karakter tapi pengembangan alurnya tetep sederhana dan mudah dimengerti jadi bener-bener gampang diinget banget segala aspek pentingnya dan ga sama sekali receh serta bikin bosen, tentunya tanpa mengorbankan detail latar belakang dari setiap karakter tersebut. Nilai dari novel ini juga sangat beragam dari mulai novel ini menyadarkan kita bahwa memang manusia itu adalah makhluk yang abu-abu kita tidak bisa menjadi sepenuhnya putih (baik) atau sepenuhnya hitam (buruk) apalagi dalam novel ini semuanya memiliki alasan, trauma, dan dendam masing-masing yang tentunya semua aksi yang keluar baik itu baik maupun buruk akan mereka anggap benar. Dan yang aku paling bisa dapat dari novel ini adalah emosi adalah senjata yang kuat dan bermata dua, jadi usahakan kendalikan emosi kita di situasi apapun serta jangan sampai menyalurkan emosi kita ke orang dan aksi yang salah karena suatu saat emosi tersebut dapat menjadi bumerang yang menyerang balik ke kita. Penokohan dalam novel ini juga sangat kompleks namun dibuat sederhana, tidak ada yang memerlukan pengetahuan khusus untuk mengerti perasaan sebuah karakter di dalam novel ini namun memerlukan pendekatan yang khusus untuk menggambarkan tragedi yang dialami oleh setiap karakter. Makanya, di awal aku bisa bilang novel ini punya alur dan keutuhan yang sempurna. 

🙋🏻‍♀️Menurutku novel ini seru banget, dari plot cerita dan tiap tiap karakter tuh sangat berkaitan. Kalau dari tipe penulisan bab yang ada di novel ini dibagi menjadi 5 sudut pandang karakter (yang mana hal itu fresh banget buat aku sebagai penggemar m*rder mystery). Aku juga suka banget sama side story dan amanat dari cerita ini especially mengenai hukum tabur tuai, sebagaimana masa lalu atau masa kecil kita dapat berdampak pada karakter kita nantinya.

Penance — Sae, Maki, Akiko, and Yuka are four children who are friends in a small village. The village is backward or far from the hustle and bustle and technological advances. It is characterized by the nature of its inhabitants who like to gossip or gossip with other residents, the number is just that, the education is inadequate and even so small this village announces the end of the day can use a song that is announced from one loudspeaker. Sae, Maki, Akiko, and Yuka always played together in the village, their favorite game being French dolls which were the trend in the village at the time. All the children in the village must have a French doll and its stature is very similar to the owner. One day a family moved from Tokyo to a small village. The family moved to the small village because they established a new factory, the Adachi manufacturing plant, of course the head of the family was the managing director of the Adachi factory. The family consisted of three people, Adachi, Asako and a little girl named Emily.

Emily's family is basically a wealthy family, they live in a luxury apartment and of course have luxury items. Long story short Emily ended up being sent to the village's local school where she became new friends with Sae, Maki, Akiko, and Yuka. Like most children Emily was very happy to have new friends, even though there was an economic gap between Emily and her new friends she still introduced them to her mother and showed her favorite doll, a Barbie doll. However, the four children were not interested in Barbie dolls because they thought the doll was very expensive, then they introduced the French doll to Emily and gradually they became more familiar with Emily. One day Emily and the four children planned to play volleyball on the school field in the summer break, after they prepared items to play such as balls and others they went to the field and played volleyball with the target of passing the ball to one hundred. When they were about to touch the number one hundred there was a man who stopped their game and asked for help to help turn the bolts and needed one person, then after they considered and volunteered the man chose Emily to help him, and the volley game continued. However, Emily did not return to the field, what happened? Then, the four of them went to the pool where Emily and the man had gone but Emily wasn't there, they finally checked the women's and men's bathrooms and Emily was found in the men's bathroom lifeless. 

What really happened? Why did someone kill Emily?

🙋🏻‍♂️ I'm actually speechless because there's so much to discuss about this novel. Okay, let's start with the plot. The plot is perfect in my opinion, why? Because the author-Minato Kanae can make all the tragedies and plot twists here come full circle, in other words, the problem from the first source ends up affecting the first source as well. The plot development is also very unique, there are five POVs that are presented in this novel that will carry this storyline, all of them have their own tragedies in them and are full of darkness. Although the plot is carried from five POV characters, the plot development is still simple and easy to understand so it is really easy to remember all the important aspects and not at all trivial and boring, of course without sacrificing the background details of each character. The value of this novel is also very diverse, starting from this novel makes us realize that humans are gray creatures, we cannot be completely white (good) or completely black (bad), especially in this novel, everyone has their own reasons, traumas, and grudges, of course, all the actions that come out, both good and bad, they will consider right. And the most I can get from this novel is that emotions are powerful and double-edged weapons, so try to control our emotions in any situation and don't channel our emotions into the wrong people and actions because one day they can backfire on us. The characterization in this novel is also very complex but made simple, no one needs special knowledge to understand the feelings of a character in this novel but requires a special approach to describe the tragedy experienced by each character. Hence, at the beginning I can say that this novel has a perfect flow and wholeness. 

🙋🏻‍♀️I think this novel is really exciting, from the story plot and each character is very related. The type of chapter writing in this novel is divided into 5 character points of view (which is really fresh for me as a m*rder mystery fan). I also really like the side story and the message of this story, especially about the law of sowing and reaping, as our past or childhood can have an impact on our character later.
