Hotel Bertram — Cerita dimulai dengan Miss Marple berkunjung untuk menginap di sebuah hotel mewah namun kuno di daerah London. Nama hotel tersebut tidak lain dan tidak bukan adalah hotel Bertram, hotel yang terkenal mewah namun tetap mempertahankan nuansa masa lampaunya. Hotel tersebut dipandang kuno karena semua furnitur dan perabot yang dimiliki hotel tersebut adalah ciri khas masa lampau Inggris pada tahun 70 an di mana pada saat itu Miss Marple yang masih kanak-kanak pernah mengunjungi hotel ini dan tidak ada yang berubah signifikan pada saat Miss Marple saat ini yang sudah tua mengunjunginya lagi. Nuansa kuno tersebut diperkuat dengan adanya tradisi-tradisi masa lalu Inggris yang dipertahankan hotel tersebut; seperti jamuan teh pagi layaknya kebiasaan Inggris zaman dulu, makanan khas zaman tersebut seperti kue muffin yang sangat lezat hingga pengunjungnya pun orang-orang tua yang sudah uzur namun kaya raya yang ingin menikmati bernostalgia semasa hidupnya dulu. Namun, hotel ini pun menawarkan fasilitas modern agar bisa berkembang dengan zaman dan agar pengunjung dari masa modern selalu nyaman. Fasilitas tersebut diantaranya adalah pemanas ruangan, shower kamar mandi, makanan modern dan lainnya.

Karena intuisi dan observasinya yang tajam, Miss Marple mencium kejanggalan pada hotel ini. Ya, tidak diragukan bahwa hotel ini merupakan hotel terhormat di London, dan ya hotel ini memiliki pelayanan yang luar biasa, namun Miss Marple mencurigai hal tersebut hanyalah kedok untuk menutupi kebusukan di balik keindahan. Hingga pada suatu hari seorang biarawan hilang entah kemana. Polisi pun segera membuka penyelidikan lebih lanjut karena hilangnya biarawan tersebut, usut punya usut biarawan tersebut tiba-tiba muncul dan bersaksi bahwa kata orang dirinya mengalami kecelakaan dan gegar otak ringan. Walaupun biarawan tersebut memiliki keterbatasan ingatan (pikun) namun belum sampai separah itu dan dirinya tidak bisa mengingat bagaimana terjadi kecelakaan tersebut. Polisi pun tetap melanjutkan investigasi karena inspektur Davy pemimpin penyelidikan menaruh kecurigaan yang kuat pada hotel tersebut atas hasil-hasil kecil investigasinya. Lalu, pada suatu saat kabut menutupi hotel seorang perempuan ditembak, namun diselamatkan oleh penjaga pintu hotel tersebut.

Apa yang terjadi? Siapakah pembunuh tersebut? Ada apa di balik hotel Bertram?

🙋🏻‍♂️ Ini kali kedua aku membaca novel Agatha Christie dari seri Miss Marple. Kesanku pertama pas baca novel ini adalah terjemahannya bagus, tidak kaku dan sangat luwes tidak seperti novel-novel terjemahan Agatha Christie sebelumnya yang pernah kubaca. Karena terjemahannya bagus aku pun sangat senang membacanya hingga progress bacanya pun menjadi cepat, padahal aku dan Nora lagi sibuk hehe. Lanjut kita ke alur cerita. Aku baru baca juga alur yang seperti ini, karena pembunuhan tidak terjadi pada awal buku sampai hampir akhir buku, investigasi polisi pun sudah ada terlebih dahulu sebelum kasus pembunuhannya—ya walaupun itu karena ada kasus orang hilang sebelumnya juga sih. Tapi tetep ini baru dan memang agak membosankan, tapi karena terjemahannya bagus aku tetep enjoy baca novelnya. Mungkin kurang ada yang begitu membekas di novel ini, karena novel ini sesimpel ada hotel bagus namun itu hanya kedok untuk menutupi kejahatan atau sindikat-sindikat di balik hotel tersebut. Apalagi alur ceritanya berhenti ketika otak kejahatannya sudah berhasil diketahui dan karena dia di bawah umur jadi tidak langsung dihukum. Karena itu, aku kurang puas dengan endingnya.

At Bertram’s Hotel — The story begins with Miss Marple visiting to stay at a luxurious yet quaint hotel in the London area. The name of the hotel is none other than the Bertram hotel, a famously luxurious hotel that still retains its old-fashioned feel. The hotel is considered old-fashioned because all the furniture and furnishings of the hotel are typical of England's past in the 70s where Miss Marple as a child visited this hotel and nothing has changed significantly when the current Miss Marple visits it again. The old-fashioned feel is reinforced by the traditions of England's past that the hotel maintains; such as morning tea as was the custom of the old England, specialties of the era such as delicious muffins and even the visitors are old but wealthy people who want to enjoy the nostalgia of their past life. However, the hotel also offers modern amenities to keep up with the times and keep modern-day visitors comfortable. These facilities include heating, bathroom showers, modern food and more.

Because of her keen intuition and observation, Miss Marple smells something wrong with this hotel. Yes, there was no doubt that it was a respectable hotel in London, and yes it had exceptional service, but Miss Marple suspected it was just a front to cover up the rot behind the beauty. Until one day a monk goes missing. The police immediately opened a further investigation into the monk's disappearance, but the monk suddenly appeared and testified that he had an accident and a mild concussion. Although the monk has a limited memory (senile dementia), it has not been that severe and he cannot remember how the accident occurred. The police continued to investigate because Inspector Davy, the leader of the investigation, had strong suspicions about the hotel based on the small results of his investigation. Then, at one point when fog covered the hotel a woman was shot, but was saved by the hotel doorman.

🙋🏻‍♂️ This is my second time reading Agatha Christie's Miss Marple series. My first impression when reading this novel is that the translation is good, not stiff and very flexible unlike the previous Agatha Christie translated novels that I have read. Because the translation was good, I was very happy to read it so that the reading progress became fast, even though Nora and I were busy hehe. Let's move on to the storyline. I've just read this kind of plot too, because the murder doesn't happen at the beginning of the book until almost the end of the book. The police investigation had already existed before the murder case—although that's because there was a previous missing person case too. But it's still new and a bit boring, but because the translation is good I still enjoy reading the novel. Maybe there is nothing that is so imprinted in this novel, because this novel is as simple as there is a good hotel but it is only a cover to cover up the crimes or syndicates behind the hotel. Moreover, the plot stops when the mastermind of the crime is identified and because he is a minor, he is not punished immediately. Because of this, I was not satisfied with the ending.
