Jini Jinny — Cerita dimulai ketika Jini, seorang pengasuh serta asisten profesor pada bidang penangkaran primata (seperti simpanse dan sejenisnya) berada di Kamp Wamba di daerah Kinshasa. Pada saat itu Jini yang sedang mencari oleh-oleh karena penerbangannya ditunda dilanda badai yang sangat besar, kemudian Jini mencari tempat untuk berteduh dan bertemulah dirinya dengan sebuah toko dan otomatis dirinya berpikir “itulah tempat berteduhku.”

Ternyata di dalam toko tersebut sangatlah gelap, namun pada sepersekian detik kemudian terdengar suara seperti burung pada sebuah kotak yang ditutupi kain hitam. Dengan rasa penasaran Jini pun menghampiri kotak tersebut dan membuka kain yang menutupinya. Ternyata itu bukanlah kotak melainkan sebuah kandang yang mengurung seekor bonobo (sejenis simpanse) kecil. Karena pekerjaan dirinya selalu meliputi primata maka rasa simpatinya muncul saat itu dan Jini langsung memperkenalkan dirinya pada bonobo tersebut.

Singkat cerita Lee Jini tidak menyelamatkan seekor bonobo kecil tersebut dalam kandang pemburu ilegal. Jini sangat merasa bersalah atas tindakan tidak bertanggung jawabnya tersebut bahkan dia merasa dihantui perasaan tersebut.

Pada suatu saat di Pusat Riset Primata di mana Jini bekerja terdapat laporan bahwa ada seekor bonobo yang kabur hingga ke daerah paviliun dekat danau Indong karena ada vila yang terbakar dan isinya merupakan hewan-hewan yang ditangkap secara ilegal termasuk bonobo tersebut. Profesor yang sedang menunggu kelahiran seekor bayi simpanse mendengar kabar tersebut langsung berinisiatif pergi ke tempat kejadian dan tentunya mengajak Lee Jini untuk mendampinginya.

Setelah sampai pada tempat kejadian Lee Jini langsung cepat mengambil tindakan untuk membujuk bonobo tersebut agar bisa diselamatkan. Namun, Jini merasa bonobo ini tidak asing, apakah bonobo ini adalah yang di Kinshasa juga?

Singkat cerita mereka dapat membujuk dan menyelamatkan bonobo tersebut walaupun harus menembakan senjata bius. Namun hal yang tak terduga terjadi. Pada saat Jini dan Profesor akan kembali ke Pusat Riset Primata mereka mengalami kecelakaan tragis.

🙋🏻‍♂️ Wah walaupun memang novel ini tidak memenuhi ekspektasiku, tapi novel ini bagus sekali dalam menyampaikan pesan tersirat di dalamnya. Ya, awalnya aku kira novel dari Jeong You Jeong ini akan mengambil tema yang sama yaitu pembunuhan yang dilihat dan dianalisis dari segi psikologisnya seperti novel “Anak Teladan” dan “7 tahun Kegelapan.” Namun ini berbeda, novel ini tidak membahas pembunuhan melainkan membahas kematian itu sendiri. Tentunya bagian analisis psikologisnya tetap dipertahankan.

Kematian? Bagaimana ini tentang kematian?

Kalau kalian baca sampai terakhir di bagian “Kata Penulis” kalian akan menemukan bagaimana kisah fiksi ini terinspirasi dan tercipta. Persis yang aku tulis juga di bagian “Fakta Menarik” novel ini terinspirasi dari Ibunya yang melawan penyakit dalam kondisi koma selama tiga hari sebelum tiada atau meninggal. Jadi memang yang dibahas adalah tiga hari menegangkan sebelum semuanya berakhir, seperti yang terjadi pada tokoh utama Jini yang mengalami koma setelah kecelakaan tersebut yang yah –spoiler alert– sebelum Jini benar-benar meninggalkan dunia ini selamanya.

Tentunya yang paling aku suka dari karya-karyanya Jeong You Jeong adalah bagian “Kata Penulis” nya. Karena di sana dia menjelaskan bagaimana cerita ini terinspirasi dan apa yang menjadi keputusan atau pertimbangan kisah ini bergenre fantasi bukan seperti novel-novel sebelumnya yang aku baca. Walaupun memang endingnya mudah tertebak tapi aku tidak menyangka akan menjadi heartwarming dan bikin nangis hehe.

The novel Jini Jinny was inspired by the author’s own mother, who fought for her life in the ICU while in a coma. Jeong You Jeong often wondered where her mother’s soul went during that time, and that’s why the main character, Jini, goes through the same experience in the story.

Jini Jinny — The story begins with Jini, a caretaker and assistant professor in primate conservation, staying at Camp Wamba in Kinshasa. When her flight was delayed because of a huge storm, she went out looking for souvenirs. Caught in the downpour, she spotted a small shop and immediately thought, “That’s where I’ll take shelter.”

It turned out the shop was really dark, but then, just a split second later, Jini heard a sound like a bird coming from a box covered with a black cloth. Curious, she walked over and lifted the cloth. To her surprise, it wasn’t a box at all, but a cage holding a small bonobo. Since she often worked with primates, she instantly felt sympathy and introduced herself to the little bonobo.

My name is Lee Jini, your friend.

Here’s a casual English version of your sentence:

Long story short, Lee Jini didn’t save the little bonobo from the illegal hunters’ cage. She felt really guilty about it, like the guilt kept haunting her.

One day at the Primate Research Center where Jini worked, there was a report about a bonobo that escaped to the pavilion area near Indong Lake after a villa caught fire. The villa had been used to keep illegally captured animals, including the bonobo. When the professor, who was waiting for the birth of a baby chimpanzee, heard the news, he immediately decided to go to the scene and, of course, asked Lee Jini to accompany him.

When Lee Jini arrived at the scene, she quickly tried to calm the bonobo so it could be rescued. But then, Jini felt like this bonobo seemed familiar—wasn’t this the same one from Kinshasa?

Long story short, they managed to calm down and rescue the bonobo, though they had to use a tranquilizer gun. But then, something unexpected happened. On their way back to the Primate Research Center, Jini and the Professor got into a terrible accident.

Inside Nick’s Mind

🙋🏻‍♂️ Even though this novel didn’t really meet my expectations, I think it’s really good at delivering the hidden messages within it. At first, I thought Jeong You Jeong’s book would take the same theme as Good Son and Seven Years of Darkness—a murder story analyzed from a psychological perspective. But this one’s different; it doesn’t focus on murder, but on death itself. Of course, the psychological analysis is still there.

Death? What’s this got to do with death?

If you read all the way to the “Author’s Note,” you’ll see how this story was inspired and came to life. Just like I mentioned in the “Fun Facts” section, the novel was inspired by the author’s mother, who fought for her life while in a coma for three days before passing away. So, the whole focus is really on those tense three days before everything ends—just like what happens to the main character, Jini, who falls into a coma after the accident and—spoiler alert—eventually leaves this world for good.

What I love most about Jeong You Jeong’s works is the “Author’s Note” section. That’s where she explains how the story was inspired and why she decided to make it a fantasy instead of the kind of novels I’ve read from her before. Even though the ending was kinda predictable, I didn’t expect it to turn out so heartwarming and even make me tear up haha.
