Membunuh Itu Gampang — Cerita dimulai dengan seorang pensiunan polisi bernama Luke yang sedang mengunjungi suatu daerah di Inggris bertemu dengan wanita tua bernama Ms. Pinkerton. Selayaknya nenek-nenek, Pinkerton ini langsung mengajak Luke untuk mengobrol panjang lebar dan salah satu pembahasannya adalah banyak terjadinya pembunuhan di Wychwood. Singkatnya di Wychwood memang telah terjadi kejadian orang tiba-tiba meninggal dengan cara yang hampir tidak wajar, maka dari itu Ms. Pinkerton menaiki kereta ini untuk ke Scotland Yard akan membuat laporan pengaduan pembunuhan.
Awalnya Luke tidak percaya, dan dirinya memberi tahu kisah dari Ms. Pinkerton ini ke rekan polisinya, dan memang temannya pun terlihat tidak percaya. Namun, selang beberapa menit kemudian Luke mengambil koran untuk hari ini dan melihat ada kabar bahwa Lavinia Pinkerton telah meninggal akibat tabrak lari sebelum tiba di Scotland Yard.
Pikir Luke ini pasti tidak mungkin sebuah kebetulan, terlalu janggal untuk disebut sebuah kebetulan. Maka dengan bantuan temannya Luke memiliki misi untuk menginvestigasi apa yang sebenarnya terjadi di Wychwood dengan menyamar menjadi penulis buku.
Bagaimanakah perjalanan Luke di sana? Apakah pembunuhnya dapat ditemukan?

Dari sekian banyak buku mystery/thriller yang kubaca baru kali ini aku bisa menebak siapa yang jadi pembunuhnya, walaupun tetap motif pembunuhan tidak bisa tertebak. Jujur novel ini agak membosankan, mungkin karena memang pembawaannya di zaman dahulu ya namanya juga buku klasik. Tapi untuk yang rindu sama detektif alias mencari jejak pelaku, analisis motif, dan hal mendetail lainnya pasti ini novel seru aja sih.
Tapi ada hal yang mengganggu pada saat aku membaca, yaitu terjemahannya. Hasil terjemahannya terlalu literal sehingga kadang jadi bikin aku bingung deskripsiin dalam otakku apa yang sebenarnya terjadi pada scene ini. Twistnya juga tidak terlalu yang memukau karena mungkin bagi kalian yang sering baca buku mystery khususnya detektif begini bisa langsung nebak kasar siapa yang jadi pelakunya.

Murder Is Easy — The story starts with a retired police officer named Luke who is visiting an area in England and meets an elderly woman named Ms. Pinkerton. Like a typical grandma, Pinkerton immediately strikes up a long conversation with Luke, and one of the topics she brings up is the number of murders happening in Wychwood. Long story short, Wychwood has seen several sudden deaths under suspicious circumstances, which is why Ms. Pinkerton is on this train heading to Scotland Yard to file a report about these murders.
At first Luke does not believe her, and he tells Ms. Pinkerton’s story to his police colleague, who also seems skeptical. But a few minutes later Luke picks up today’s newspaper and sees the news that Lavinia Pinkerton has died after being struck by a car before she could reach Scotland Yard.
Luke feels this cannot possibly be a coincidence. It is far too strange to be called one. With the help of his friend, Luke takes on a mission to investigate what is really happening in Wychwood by going undercover as a book writer.
So how will Luke’s journey there unfold? Will the killer finally be found?

Out of all the mystery and thriller books I have read, this is the first time I was able to guess who the killer was, even though the motive behind the murder was still hard to predict. Honestly, this novel felt a bit boring to me, probably because it is a classic and the storytelling style feels old fashioned. Still, for readers who miss classic detective stories like tracking clues, analyzing motives, and paying attention to small details, this book can be enjoyable enough.
However, there was one thing that really bothered me while reading, which was the translation. The translation felt too literal, and at times it made it hard for me to visualize what was actually happening in certain scenes. The story felt stiff and did not flow smoothly in my head. On top of that, the twist was not that impressive. For readers who are already familiar with mystery novels, especially detective stories, it is quite easy to roughly guess who the culprit is early on.
