TSTDWK — Cerita dimulai dengan kalimat misterius “jika anda memiliki informasi, mohon hubungi saya.” Kemudian berlanjut kepada penemuan-penemuan kisah-kisah horor misterius yang dimuat di surat kabar atau media-media internet lain. Salah satu pengumpul cerita horor tersebut adalah Ozawa.

Ozawa mengumpulkan banyak cerita-cerita horor di internet maupun dari hasil wawancara, karena dirinya adalah seorang staff di dalam sebuah media kabar di divisi horor. Divisi horor ini adalah, divisi yang membahas semua kejadian misterius mulai dari okultisme, supernatural, paranormal dan hal-hal yang terkait dunia hantu atau ghaib. 

Karena peminat konten dari divisi ini kian hari menurun jumlahnya, Ozawa memutar otak untuk menghasilkan konten baru namun tidak harus membuat yang seratus persen baru. Maka Ozawa memiliki ide untuk menghimpun semua hasil investigasi rekan-rekannya tentang liputan horor mereka dari awal.

Singkat cerita akhirnya Ozawa menemukan peristiwa-peristiwa aneh dan tidak bisa dijelaskan dengan logika biasa. Kejadian paranormal ini terjadi di sekitar wilayah Kinki dan sering terjadi di gunung dan bendungan. Seiring waktu dan investigasi yang dilakukan oleh Ozawa berjalan, akhirnya dirinya perlahan-lahan menemukan benang merah pada semua peristiwa aneh ini.

🙋🏻‍♂️Sangat-sangat tidak mengecewakan. Walaupun aku sempat sudah ter-spoiler sedikit sebelumnya bahwa buku ini menceritakan soal suatu ajaran menyimpang atau yang biasa disebut sekte sesat. Tetapi, tetap buku ini dari awal hingga akhir tidak membosankan (page turning).

Buku ini memiliki penulisan sensor yang unik. Dengan tanda bulat hitam dan putih/transparan, penulis memutuskan untuk menyensor hal-hal yang berkaitan dengan privasi seperti nama, alamat, hingga suatu wilayah Kinki yang misterius ini tidak diungkap hingga akhir! Karena gaya sensor ini, kita sebagai pembaca seperti beneran diajak untuk membaca surat kabar atau hasil dari media-media dalam meliput kejadian horor di wilayah Kinki ini. Kemudian, hal tersebut juga menambah kesan horor dan misterius karena kita jadi tidak mengetahui karakter-karakter yang disebutkan di dalam surat kabar tersebut, yang kita rasakan hanya misteri dari kejadian paranormal.

Buku ini juga dilengkapi dengan ilustrasi bahkan foto-foto hasil liputan yang tertera dalam surat kabar atau internet. Jadi, bener-bener kita lagi baca semua kisah misterius di wilayah Kinki ini melalui media utuh gitu. Tapi karena kita sebagai pembaca itu digiring untuk fokus kepada kisah-kisah misterius, perasaan terhubung ke karakternya menurutku jadi hilang. Aku baca buku ini tidak merasa punya hubungan khusus dengan karakter di dalamnya, karena hal tersebut ending dari buku ini tidak memiliki bekas khusus pas aku baca, padahal build up dari awalnya sudah sangat bagus.

The censored parts are usually the names of characters in certain story segments and the name of a place somewhere in the Kinki region. Besides that, the novel was also adapted into a movie titled “About a Place in the Kinki Region”.

TSTDWK — The story begins with a mysterious sentence: “If you have any information, please contact me.” From there, it moves into a collection of strange horror stories that have appeared in newspapers and various online media. One of the people gathering these stories is Ozawa.

Ozawa collects horror stories from the internet as well as from interviews because he works as a staff member for a media company in its horror division. This division focuses on mysterious events, including occult cases, supernatural phenomena, paranormal encounters, and anything related to ghosts or the unseen world.

As interest in the division's content continues to decline, Ozawa starts looking for a way to create something new without having to come up with a completely original story. He eventually comes up with the idea of compiling all the horror investigations and reports that his colleagues have worked on over the years.

As the project progresses, Ozawa begins to uncover a series of strange incidents that cannot be explained by ordinary logic. These paranormal events mostly take place around the Kinki region and often occur near mountains and dams. The deeper Ozawa investigates, the more he starts to notice a connection linking all of these bizarre occurrences together.

🙋🏻‍♂️It was absolutely not disappointing. Even though I had already been spoiled a little beforehand and knew that the book was related to a cult or a questionable religious group, it was still engaging from beginning to end and incredibly page turning.

One of the most interesting things about this book is its unique censorship style. Using black and transparent circles, the author censors anything related to privacy, including names, addresses, and even the mysterious area in the Kinki region, which remains hidden until the very end. Because of this approach, readers genuinely feel like they are reading actual newspaper articles and media reports covering the strange events happening in the Kinki region. It also strengthens the horror and mystery atmosphere because we never really know who the people mentioned in those reports are. All we are left with is the mystery of the paranormal incidents themselves.

The book is also filled with illustrations and even photos that are presented as materials from newspapers or online reports. It really feels as if you are exploring all these mysterious events through real media coverage. However, because the story constantly pushes readers to focus on the mysteries themselves, I felt less connected to the characters. I never really formed an emotional attachment to anyone in the book. As a result, the ending did not leave a particularly strong emotional impact on me, even though the buildup throughout the story was excellent.
